Rishi Sunak
Hello again. Here’s what we’re talking about heading into the new week.
The big hearing: Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appears before Parliament’s Liaison Committee on Tuesday and is likely to be grilled about the economy, global issues and “strategic thinking in government.” As we know, much of the strategic thinking right now is about how to avoid a Tory wipeout at the next general election.
The big speech: Hawkish Bank of England policymaker Catherine Mann speaks in Belfast on Monday and may have more to say about last week’s policy decision, at which rates were held steady but she finally abandoned a tightening bias — potentially paving the way for a June rate cut.
The big attack: The fallout from Moscow’s worst terror attack in decades could be wide ranging. President Vladimir Putin has looked to shift blame to Ukraine, even as Islamic State claimed responsibility and offered evidence of its involvement, stirring fears the assault could be used as justification for a new mass mobilization. UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt warned on Sunday against a “smokescreen of propaganda” from Moscow.
